How to elope in New York City

For a weekday NYC elopement, City Hall can anchor the day: a ceremony appointment, portraits together and a celebration of your own. A park or private-venue ceremony needs its own arrangements. Begin with the format, then fit the photographs around it.

Six decisions that shape the day

  1. Choose the ceremony format

A City Clerk ceremony gives you an official appointment as the anchor for the day. An outdoor or private-venue ceremony also needs its own officiant and location arrangements.

  2. Check the official process

Obtain a valid marriage license and check the waiting period before arranging your ceremony. Our City Hall guide explains the separate license and ceremony steps.

  3. Define who will be there

Decide whether the day is just the two of you or includes guests. Check the chosen office or venue’s attendee rules before inviting people.

  4. Pick the moments for photographs

Start with the ceremony and portraits. Add getting ready or a celebration if those memories matter to you. This list is more useful than choosing a package by price alone.

  5. Make a realistic route

Select a starting point and a small number of meaningful photo settings. Walking, transport, access and time with guests all need space in the plan.

  6. Confirm the practical details

Recheck appointments, permissions, access and weather arrangements before the day. Share changes with your photographer so the plan reflects the ceremony you actually have booked.

License first, ceremony afterward

NYC requires an appointment to obtain the marriage license, in person or virtually through Project Cupid; walk-ins are unavailable. The usual wait between receiving the license and marrying is at least 24 hours. A judge can issue a waiver.

Separate photography from the other arrangements

Your budget may include official fees, photography, a venue, an officiant and choices such as flowers or a meal. List them separately so a photography price does not become an assumed total for the whole wedding.

Elope Me’s photography packages are JUST THE TWO OF US at $1,850, NYC CLASSIC at $2,700 and THE MICRO-WEDDING at $5,200. Compare the coverage for your plans; make your official ceremony and permit arrangements separately.

Choose a plan you can enjoy

A long list of landmarks can use up a portrait session in travel. Begin with what matters most to you: the ceremony, a place with personal meaning, portraits together or time with your guests.

Keep the meeting point, transport and any walking limitations in view. Discuss an outdoor alternative and the specific arrangements that apply to your date, rather than assuming that every location is interchangeable.

Questions before you choose

Can we start planning without a date?

You can explore photography coverage and possible ceremony formats before settling on a date. Appointment and venue availability will help determine the final plan.

Does a photography package arrange the marriage?

Elope Me’s published packages are photography services with planning consultations for locations and timing. Book official appointments and arrange any separate officiant, venue or permit through the relevant provider.

Where should we read the current rules?

Use the official sources below and confirm the rules for your chosen office or location. A general planning guide cannot establish availability or permission for a particular date.
